Biography

Scottish-born John McLeod Campbell attended the University of Glasgow and the University of Edinburgh. Campbell excelled in Latin and Hebrew. As a licensed preacher, he addressed the issues of the day as well as an emphasis on universal atonement. The presbytery called into question some of his teachings that did not align with the Westminster Standards. Eventually Campbell was stripped of his ministry. He spent a couple of years evangelizing in Scotland before pastoring an independent chapel in Glasgow for sixteen years. Campbell died from cancer in 1872. His legacy includes books and sermons published throughout his life and some posthumously.
