Biography

James M. Gray was a native New Yorker. Born in 1851, he was raised by a brother due to his father's early death. Ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church, he served several congregations in New York, Boston, and eventually Chicago. His lectures at the Mood Bible Institute made an impression on DL Moody, who asked Gray to join in the evangelical work of the institute. After Moody's death, Gray would become not only one of the deans of Moody Institute but its president. Under Gray's leadership, the Institute expanded its student population as well as improving its financial footing. Gray saw the potential of radio and developed Moody's radio ministry. Gray died in 1935.
